In greek mythology, these masks represent the Muse of Tragedy, Melpomene, and the Muse of Comedy, Thalia. Masks such as these were used in greek theater to represent different characters, and their exaggerated expressions were crafted so that people in the back of the theater could tell them apart. Today they represent the dramatic arts, such as theater, television and cinema.
